The School of Mechanical Engineering (hereinafter referred to as “the school”) dates from the Department of Iron & Steel Machinery in the early period of USTB (the former Beijing University of Iron and Steel Technology) in 1952. Over the last six decades, it has grown from one major (Metallurgical Machinery) into multiple disciplines, namely, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Logistics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Design,Art & Design and Visual Communication. After the 1990s, the school’s development reached a new level with the addition of Thermal Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Building Environment and Equipment Engineering and other related disciplines.

At present, the school offers six undergraduate programs (Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Design and Visual Communication), three postgraduate programs (Mechanical Engineering, Logistics Engineering and Design Art) and four programs for Master of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Logistics Engineering and Industrial Engineering). Among the graduate disciplines, “Mechanical Engineering”, is designated a state first-level discipline and a key discipline in Beijing, and therefore has the right to grant doctoral degrees and also to offer a postdoctoral program; “Logistics Engineering” can grant degrees of Doctor of Engineering or Doctor of Management; “Design ” has the right to grant the degree of Master of Art. Among the four majors for Master of Engineering, “Mechanical Engineering” has played a leading role in developing on-the-job postgraduate training and industrial internships nationwide since the 1990s. The excellent quality of training has secured the school a well-deserved reputation among domestic metallurgical enterprises.

The disciplines of the school cover three categories: Engineering, Management and Art, which specializes in developing interdisciplinary skills combining engineering and art. The school recruits more than 400 undergraduates, 300 postgraduates and Ph.D. students each year with the highest student enrolment of the USTB, the whole university.

The school boasts a prestigious faculty, offering high quality teaching and including Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, entrants of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts (also known as “the Thousand Talents Program”), recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, researchers of the Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other distinguished teachers. The school has more than 120 full-time teachers, including over 30 professors and 50 associate professors. It consists of seven departments, four institutes, and three provincial key laboratories and engineering centres. The Technology Innovation Base provides a solid foundation for nurturing and supporting students in developing science and technology innovation activities. In recent years, students have obtained excellent achievements in national scientific and technological competitions and other academic contests, such as the “Challenge Cup” National Undergraduate Competition, National Student Robot Contest, the National and International Intelligent Car Competition, National College Students’ Advanced Mapping Technology and Product Information Modelling Innovation Contest,National College Students’ Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, National Contest in Logistics Design by University Students, National Undergraduate Original Animation Design Contest, National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest in Energy Saving & Emission Reduction and National Contests for College Students (Mathematics/English/Physics), etc.

Over the last six decades, the school has trained over 15,000 undergraduates, over 3,000 postgraduates and 400 Ph.D. students, including Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the commander in chief of the manned submersible “Jiaolong”, an expert at China's manned spaceflight engineering, political elites and business leaders, all of them backbones in the field of politics, economy, science, technology and education.

Over the last six decades, the school has produced many influential achievements at home and abroad: the first continuous casting equipment, the first heavy industrial manipulator, the first Experimental Computer Control System of Hot Rolling, the first Experimental Research Base of Cross-wedge Rolling. The school has won more than 100 national and provincial awards in science, technology and teaching exemplified by “the Grand Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award”. These achievements bear witness to the outstanding contributions made by our school to China’s science and technology development and economic growth.

The school has maintained close cooperative relations with dozens of renowned foreign universities and research institutions, developing into an international cooperation mechanism on a national level. It has completed dozens of international cooperation projects and has successfully held (organized) more than ten large-scale international academic conferences. The school enables and encourages students to undertake degree programs and non-degree study in other universities and research institutions at home and abroad. A hundred or more students go to well-known universities overseas to study or take part in academic activities every year. The school has also invited scholars from other universities at home and abroad to give lectures or take classes, which promotes the internationality of our school and broadens the international horizons of our students.

True to its motto “Setting high moral values to cultivate students, seeking truth and endorsing innovation”, the School of Mechanical Engineering has developed into the largest base of elite training and high-level research with the highest number of major specialisms and distinctive disciplines.
